A Brief Account of Yancheng
Yancheng is located in the middle of the northen Jiangsu plain, bordering the Yellow Sea in the east, Huaiyin and Yangzhou in the west, Nantong in the south and Lianyungang in the north. In 1983 the city was founded to replace Yancheng Prefecture, governing two county-level cities of Dongtai and Dafeng, and five counties, namely,Jianhu,Sheyang,Funing,Binhai,Xiangshui.The city proper consists of Yandu Districts ,Tinghu District and Yancheng Economic Development Zone. The urban district occupies an area of 1,720 square kilometers with a population of 1,526,400. Yancheng spans 17,000 square kilometers, and its total population is 8,047,300. There are 138 townsships, 9 subdistrict offices, 1,954 villagers' committees, 483 residents' committees. It ranks the top in terms of area and the second in terms of population in Jiangsu province. Yancheng was set up as "Yandu county" in 119 B.C. "Yan" means salt and "du" means the river for salt transportation. In the year of 411, the name of "Yancheng" was put into use because the whole town was surrounded by salterns. The rich salt culture has been created during the past 2,000 years. In ancient times, it was once called "Home of Huai salt" for its great output of salt. Tranditional Revolutionary Area and a New City with Hundreds of Rivers
Yancheng is an old revolutionary area. After the Southern Anhui Incident, the CPC Central Committee immediately decided to rebuild in Yancheng the military headquarters of the New Fourth Army. Then, many organizations were built up in succession, such as Mid-China Branch of CPC, Branch of New Fourth Army of Central Military Committee, Party School of Mid-China, the Fifth Branch Institute of Anti-Japanese Union, Mid-china Branch of Luxun Art Institute and Bank of Jiang-Huai. Therefore, Yancheng had become the political, economic and cultural center of the Mid-China enemies rear area.There was once a saying that goes "There is a Yancheng in Northern Jiangsu as Yan'an in Northern Shanxi" . Many famous proletarin revolutionaries used to fight here, such as Liu Shaoqi, Chen Yi, Huang Kecheng, Su Yu, Ye Fei, Zhang Aiping, Hong Xuezhi, Zeng Shan and many others. Yancheng has the most representative facilities in memory of the New Fourth Army with the biggest scale and the most complete materials. Also in Baiju town of Dafeng builds a monument in commemoration of the joining of force of the New Fourth Army and the Eighth Route Army. Yancheng is located in the region of Lixia Rivier of Northern Jiangsu, with many small rivers winding forward and crisscrossing each other, forming a notable character of water city , and is so-called 'a City with hundreds of rivers'. The main rivers running cross the city are: Xinyanggang River, Python River, Chuanchang River, Picha River, Xiaoyang River, Tongyu River and so on. They are regarded as ecological water line and an ecological corridor. Besides, a forest park and a water park are now being programmed in the tourist region of Dayang Bay, which lies near the city center in Tinghu District. According to the new blueprint of city planning, Yancheng will be divided into 6 zones by main roads and rivers and become a typical city of rivers. The development of river regions and the scenic construction will increase the number of close water areas.The human beings, the water area and the whole city will develop and grow together. At present Yancheng is at the acceleration period of industrialization and urbanization. It's crucial for the city to upgrade its economic position in Jiangsu province. The new goal of "Building a relatively well-off society and establishing a new Yancheng" was put forward at the 5th CPC Yancheng Committee Congress. In the next five years, the tactics of new type industrialization, agriculture industrialization, urbanization, economic globalization, market internationalization will be carried out and a well-off society in all-round way will be realized. By the year of 2011, the comprehensive economic strength will be enhanced. GDP will surpass 200 billion Yuan, per capita GDP will double every five years and reach US&3,000,00.
